about

Free and Broken

My father passed away in early June, so on top of the intensity of the world, and the grief we were already feeling, we found ourselves in a deeper sorrow. Free and Broken explores our journey as living beings constantly in search and fight for freedom, not just for ourselves but for past and future generations. I watched my father, born in Noakhali, Fenni District, Bangladesh, slowly die at 91 years of age. The end of the song is how I imagined my father was feeling and perhaps thinking as I lay witness, day after day, to his transcendence.

Free and Broken

Oh I miss the ways
That we were free and broken
To ashamed to speak
We used hands and bodies
Stealing
What joy we could find
After running for so long
You have left this pain
You are home now
You can choose where you belong

I must go on…
I must go on….
I miss you

Never had I dreamed
Of something so free and broken
Days turn into years
And we still here
wanting willing

Everything must change
We fall into each other
Strange turns into space
We call home now
They can choose
Where we belong

Everything must change Everything must change
I must go on…
Everything must change
I must go on…
Everything must change
I miss you

I lay hear now waiting
Don’t remember much
Don’t remember much

Trying, dying
To be peaceful
grateful
thankful

I lay hear now waiting
Don’t remember much
Don’t remember much

Trying, dying
To be peaceful
grateful
thankful
